The
Drake Coronelli
12" Antique-Style Reproduction Globe
This finely crafted antique style reproduction globe is
apart of the new Replogle Age of Exploration line. The globe ball features 17th
century map gores crafted by Vincenzo Coronelli. Born in Venice
1650 Coronelli is regarded as one of Italy's finest cartographers of the
17th century. As Royal Cartographer under King Louis XIV, Coronelli was
granted access to the latest documentation sent from the colonies to the French
Academy of Sciences. Also producing printed globe gores and pocket-sized globes, Coronelli's span of work is considered to represent the pinnacle of
geographic knowledge of the world in the late 17th century.
The Drake pays homage to English sailor Sir Francis Drake.
Piloting a ship eventually name the "Golden Hind," Drake was sent by Queen
Elizabeth to start an expedition against the Spanish, and set sail from
England on December 13, 1577. He eventually returned to Plymouth on
September 26, 1580, and was hailed as the first Englishman to circumnavigate
the Earth. The Coronelli globe ball, mounted in a fully calibrated brass
meridian, is supported by the Drake inspired base. Its graceful Victorian
design features a unique hand-painted tripod base crafted of beautiful
hardwood.
An elegant handcrafted masterpiece that combines
cartographic excellence with Old World appeal.
