This is a finely crafted antique style reproduction globe
apart of the new Replogle Age of Exploration line. Featured in this version
of the LaSalle is the cartography work of famous German cartographer Martin
Waldsemüller who is best known for his Universalis Cosmographia, a 12-sheet
woodblock map dated 1507. Not only was it one of the first maps to precisely
chart latitude and longitude, but it marked the first time the name
"America" was used, referring to South America and honoring Amerigo
Vespucci. The map also depicts the Americas separated from Asia by an
expansive ocean, although the first historical records of Europeans viewing
what was the Pacific Ocean was five to six years after Waldseemüller's
created his map. One of the four known globe gores fetched $1,002,267 at
auction, a world record price for a single-sheet map.
The globe sits perched atop an elegant Victorian-style
solid hardwood floor stand inspired by French explorer Rene-Robert de
LaSalle who sailed to Canada at the age of 23. In 1682 LaSalle sailed down
the Illinois River to the Mississippi River and all the way to the Gulf of
Mexico, claiming the entire Mississippi River Basin - what he called the
Louisiana Territory - for France.
An elegant handcrafted masterpiece that combines
cartographic excellence with Old World appeal.
