The National Arbor Day Foundation...
will plant a tree in your name when you purchase either The Trinity or The Tulane globes and return the enclosed card.  Trees will be planted to help rebuild our National State Forests and Parks where extensive forest fires have occurred.

The Roots of Arbor Day

Arbor Day was the idea of J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City.  Morton, editor of Nebraska's first newspaper, tirelessly advocated planting trees on the native grasslands of his adopted state.  The early settlers needed trees for fuel, food and building material, and to provide windbreaks and shade.

In 1872 Morton first proposed a tree planting holiday to be called "Arbor Day" at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture.  Prizes were offered to counties and individuals for properly planting the largest number of trees on that day.  It was estimated that more than 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day.  During the 1870s, other states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day and the tradition began in schools in 1882.  By 1894 Arbor Day was celebrated in every state and has now spread to other countries.

J. Sterling Morton was proud of the success of Arbor Day and noted "Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future."

Celebrate Arbor Day!

An Arbor Day Celebration can be simple and brief or an all-day or all-week observance.  It can be sponsored by a neighborhood organization or school, or involve the entire city.

Raise the flag, strike up the band!  Make Arbor Day fun, make it memorable.  Organize a fun run.  Have a poster or poetry contest.  Get the PTA to sponsor a children's pageant or play.

Have an Arbor Day concert of songs about trees or with tree names in their titles.  Ask a civic group to promote a paper drive.  Use the proceeds to buy a special tree to plant in a public space.  Ask a local radio station to sponsor a tree trivia contest and give away trees to the winners.  Conduct a tree hike to see outstanding, unusual or historic trees.

Dedicate a forest or tree or a flower bed in a park and make it an occasion to talk about stewardship.  Ask a local nursery or garden center to hold an open house.  Organize an Arbor Day fair.

You can obtain a free "Celebrate Arbor Day!" packet by writing The National Arbor Day Foundation (see below).  The packet contains a sample proclamation, a children's Arbor Day play and other ideas for celebrating the Tree Planters holiday.

An Arbor Day celebration is one of the four standards for a community to be named as a Tree City USA.  For information about urban and community forestry, and Tree City USA, contact The National Arbor Day Foundation or your state forester.
