Terrestrial
Table Globe, 1541
Reproduction Globe
In the XVI Century, only
royalty and very affluent citizens were able to afford globes of this
kind. Mounted on an elaborate wood stand with turned supports and ball
feet. Complete with printed horizon ring and functioning dry compass
and bronze meridian circle. The globe is hand made on a paper maché core,
built up of twelve delicately colored gores, with polar calottes and the
oceans decorated with sailing ships. The original maps used for the set of
Terrestrial and Celestial maps were drawn by Gerardus Mercator in 1541 and
were revolutionary in that age and time. Enjoy these antique globes like a
fascinating book on the Voyages of Discovery.
