J.W. Schermerhorn & Co. untitled,
14 Bond St. New York. c.1867/8.
Very detailed 5" table globe.
Engraved hand colored gores over plaster with probable paper mache core. Oceans
in natural tan with ecliptic, analemma, many Pacific islands, detailed land
masses with many place names. Unusual turned wood column and base ebonized with
sides of base silvered and other wide points gilded. South pole opening in orb
slips over post on top of stand and fits snugly in cup style holder. Continental
United States shows no Gadsden Treaty border, large territories of Nebraska, New
Mexico, Dacota, Utah, Oregon and Washington, but Alaska is (new) "U.S. Terr."
Hence date is 1867-8. Strangely, cities, such as Olympia, Santa Fe, Austin,
Macon and St. Paul are in larger type than their states or territories. A few
small surface stains but overall in splendid condition. Fine example of a
handsome small globe by scarce globemaker in possibly unique custom stand.
