Untitled
7" Globe, England. c.1870.
7 inch orb, gores over plaster. Oceans finished in pale green. Simplified
surface with only rudimentary nomenclature. Shows some ocean currents. No
time dial. Without meridian. Raised on ornate offset bracketed stand; three
paw foot legs with three humanoid masks of moustachioed men. Stand has
raised monogram EB; title label lacking. United States sparsely named;
Prescott and Santa Fe only towns in Rocky Mountain southwest. Many location
errors. Austin placed in the Great Basin instead of Texas, Azores is in mid
Atlantic. Darfur is named in Africa but too far south, Soudan is shown in
West Africa and Libyan Desert impinges on Egypt. Surface cleaned but many
small spots repain. Couple surface repairs, later gilt paint on stand. Still
an unusual and attractive antique globe.
