Box Globe
Paris?/London? c.1830.
1.8" wood sphere over which is fitted twelve lithographed partly hand-colored
gores. Aged shellac lends a fine patina without affecting clarity of detail.
Oceans finished in light tan, outline hand color. The tiny orb lies in a
cube-shaped mahogany box with cover. Possibly made in France for the English
market. Inside box orb fits precisely. Among places named include: N. Albion,
Alaska, Taheite, Nublada I, Unusual spellings include: Hayty, Californea,
Guadimala, Cap Colonie, Nil(e) R., Thibet and Bodany Bay (New Holland). The
condition of both box and globe are excellent.
