Antique 13" German Orb
Globe
Rath,
Paul. Lipsia-Erdglobus 33 cm. Paul Rath G.m.b.H. Leipzig (on label) Die Erde
nach den neuesten Erforschungen und besten Quellen bearbeitet. Paul Rath.
Leipzig. 1923.
13" orb without time dial.
Oceans finished in parchment tan, land masses shown in a lighter shade tan
bordered in green. Shows Equator, Ecliptic and Prime Meridian only and broad
bands of ocean currents. Europe shows Tschech-Slow. and other post-Versailles
borders. German colonies gone from Africa. Still shows Petersburg in the
Russische S-Reich. While the Russians changed it to Petrograd in 1914 to avoid a
German-sounding name, the Germans continued to call it Petersburg. Australien
takes in all of Polynesia. Offset steel bracket and axis spindle raised from a
turned round column and turned round wooden base. A few chips in the gores and a
little surface damage but an interesting globe from a period the Germans wished
later to forget.
