FIRST EDITION OF THE RARE 3" SIZE

RAND, MCNALLY & CO. Rand, McNally & Co.'s New 3 Inch Terrestrial Globe. CHICAGO. c1891.

Coated paper gores over solid molded brown paper mache orb. No time dial. Title on shield shaped escutcheon in north Pacific and in fine lettering south of Australia. Oceans finished in light pea green. On conforming shaped steel half-moon mounting strut atop a clear pressed glass paperweight base. Steel mount rust surface. Although simplified, not a toy but a serious globe with much geographical detail. With many place names but many national or state boundaries omitted. Shows Aus.Hun. in Europe, old African colonies, Russian and Chinese empires. Shows Puerto Rico not designated U.S. Probably first edition. It is unusual for major map publishers to create novelty globes. Quite scarce.
