Gores and horizon ring scale
first copyrighted in New York by Copley in 1852, stand and fitting by Joslin,
Boston. 15 inch hollow metal orb dressed with plaster, with dull finish hand
colored steel engraved gores. Hand engraved nickel three-spoke time dial at
North Pole. Oceans finished in light tan, large analemma scale with explanation
in Pacific. Fine engraved nickel full ring meridian moving within a walnut
equator ring and thumbscrew clamp, the ring supported by three conforming curved
cast iron brackets. Fitted atop a cast iron baluster column with acanthus leaf
embossing, raised on cast iron tripod legs with incurvate right angle knees with
similar embossing ending in inverted trumpet flower feet. On wooden casters. The
U.S. west shows the boundaries of the immediate post Civil War with the Gadsden
Purchase boundary with Mexico (1854) incorrectly defined. The Dakotas are as yet
undivided since this occurred in 1889. Equatorial horizon ring shows old repair
with some losses to its steel engraved paper scales that show zodiac signs and
precise year time and seasons. Surface loss in southern Africa area otherwise
nicely preserved. Overall height 42.5 inches. Fine private library globe.
